An Introduction to Wedding Cakes

A wedding is one of the sweetest moments in one’s life, and to compliment the great occasion, it is only natural to serve a wedding cake.  A wedding cake, a wonderful type of sweet, is an integral part of a wedding festivities.

During the wedding reception, there is typically a wedding cake cutting ceremony.  Traditionally, the bride and the groom share the first piece of cake, feeding each other as a symbol of their commitment to care and provide for each other for years to come.  After the couple shares the first piece of cake, the guests are then served.  Sometimes, a portion of the cake (often the top tier) is preserved so that the couple can share it either on their first wedding anniversary or on the birth of their first child.

The wedding cake can be made in various flavors and colors. A single flavor can be used; however, many people try a variety of flavors for each different tier.  This way the couple can cater to the different tastes of the guests.  The topping or the icing can also be made in many ways, the traditional being the white cream icing, while fondant is the newer more versatile frosting.  Even the shape of cakes is undergoing changes.  Cake sizes can go from traditional size to massive to even making cup cakes in lieu of cake form.

Adorned the top of the cake, typically stands a bride and groom set.  Many people tailor these characters to match the couple’s personality, or choose a different symbol to decorate their cake – a ring, a dove, the initial of their shared new name, etc.
